Connecticut family law legislation and case law

Arnold Rutkin and partner Sarah Oldham litigated the landmark case Wendt v. Wendt, which established legal precedents on how courts review financial arrangements in marriages — especially when corporate employment assets are involved.

Arnold was instrumental in the passage of a 2005 statute that authorized binding arbitration in divorces. He introduced the bill through the Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and testified before the Connecticut legislature. As a member of the executive committee of the Connecticut Bar Association, Arnold testified at a state public hearing on House Bill 5536, titled An Act Concerning the Relocation of Parents Having Custody of Minor Children. The 2006 statute requires the relocating parent to prove that relocation is in the best interest of the child.

In addition, Arnold serves as a special master for family matters in the Connecticut court system.

Published articles on Connecticut family law issues

For more than a decade, Arnold was editor-in-chief of Family Advocate — the American Bar Association’s flagship national publication on family law. He also founded and was executive editor of Connecticut Family Lawyer, the official newsletter of the family law section of the Connecticut Bar Association. Arnold, partner Sarah Oldham and Kathleen Hogan are co-authors of the three-volume Connecticut Family Law and Practice was published by West Publishing and is frequently cited by Connecticut Appellate and Supreme Courts as well as the trial courts and attorneys throughout the state.

His personal history, combined with his extensive law experience and his degree in economics from the Wharton School of Business, gives him an edge when analyzing small businesses and income.
